The problem is with the radiator. When there is a leaking radiator around, there is always a possibility of destroying carpets and floorboards. Today we are going to give you some tips to fix a leaking radiator at home. You must repair the radiators very soon because they may leave major damage.

Before start to fix a leaking radiator you must pay attention to some points and prepare yourself for some usual things that may happen suddenly. One of the usual events that happen frequently is pouring water out of the radiator. Before starting to work, put some towels or another absorbent material on the floor to prevent the ground to get wet.

For finding which part of your radiator is leaking, first of all, dry the whole surface of it. When the radiator gets dried totally, you can find the leaking part.

Does your radiator valve leak?

One of the most common problems with a leaking radiator is from its radiator’s valve. It is really easy to fix it. When the spindle packing contained within the valve becomes damaged, a leaking valve normally happens. Sometimes the valve is in a mid-open position so by just fully close the valve you can stop leaking.

How to repair a leaking radiator valve?

Before starting to repair a leaking radiator valve, first of all, you must drain down the system to below exactly where the leak is occurring. Then turn off both supply valves. Supply valves are where the water enters the radiator and the lockshield valve is the plastic capped valve at the other side of the radiator. Try to dry any water that may remain in the radiator with towels.

You must undo the union nut and use an adjustable spanner. The union nut is between the feeder pipe and the radiator. The next step is, allowing the rest of the water to leave the radiator by opening the bleed valve. Again you should retighten the union nut, open the bleed and lockshield valves. Before you close it, try to remember how many times you turn it. When the water is restored to the system, re-check for any leaks and then close the bleed valve.

Do you need to replace a radiator valve?

You must buy the same new valve before you replace it. The type and size must be the same otherwise it doesn’t fit very well. Before installing the new valve, you should clean the threads at the end of the radiator. In the next step, you have to wrap PTFE tape around the threads of the new adapter. Then screw the tread into the end of the radiator, fix it as far as it doesn’t get damaged. Slide the valve cap-nut and a new olive over the end of the pipe and connect the new valve. Check the radiator for leaks once you replace the valve. Refill the system and bleed your radiator to remove any air.
